Good questions and ones that are common to the vehicle. Check out benzworld.org also. There are a lot more posts. The maintainance light is easy I just did mine following a how to post.
The gas gauge seems like it occurs on all of these trucks. It's unbelievable that MB can make cars for 100 years and all of a sudden the gas gauges don't work. Mine does exactly the same thing. I took it to the dealer right after I bought it and asked them about it. They literally told me they had never heard of the problem which if you read Benz forums is total BS. I simply reset the odometer when I fill up and wait for 3/4 tank.

Just change the oil today and did this and it worked like a champ.
To reset:
Turn the ignition key to position 2.
Immediately press the button next to the display twice within one second. The present status for days or distance will be displayed.
Within 10 seconds, turn the ignition key to the 0 position (off).
Press and hold the button while turning the key to position 2 again.
The status for days or distance will be displayed again; continue to hold the button.
After 10 seconds, a signal will sound and the display will show 10,000 miles. Release button.

I replaced the brake light switch and it resolved the BAS light when making turns. This brake light switch is a common failure part and if it fails, I was unable to disengage cruise control when tapping on the brake pedal. Also, the gears would not shift in D, when I parked and shut off the truck. The cruise schematics show the way it is wired with cruise on the same circuit, bad MB design. I always keep a spare switch.
I replaced the fuel sending unit and now the fuel gauge works perfect.
