I have a 2000 ML55 with a dealer installed trailor hitch.
The numbers printed on the hitch are:

Weight Distribution: 5000/750 (total weight/hitch weight)
Weight Carryng: 5000/750

I would like to pull a trailor that weighs 4650/775... I have a load leveling hitch...I thought the car would be able handle more weight with one, but according to the hitch it dosen't. I know the vehicle has plenty of horsepower and I test drove it on a windy day without load leveling and it seemed to pull fine even up to 70mph on the inerstate.

My questions are..

1) What is the tow limit for the vehicle?
2) What is the weak link? (transmission, suspension, brakes etc.)
3) Can I get a heavier hitch?
4) Why can't I tow more weight with weight distribution?
5) Will the 25 lbs over on the hitch weight cause problems?
(i.e. void my warrienty, excessive wear n tear, safety etc.)
6) Should I just back off to a lighter trailor?
7) Who else could I ask for advice?

Want a SUV that can do tow duty for a track car.

it can only tow as much as the trailer hitch can hold.... even the ML320's tow capacity is the same, 5000lbs.
