1st AMG -- ML55 -- Thank you and "Start Error"
The first full day we had our ML55 I found upon parking it that the remote had stopped working. I went inside, retrieved the second key, and locked the vehicle.
After changing, I went back outside, unlocked the car, jacked and blocked it -- how nice the drain plug is so close to the nose! -- placed a BIG pan to catch the spray, and removed the plug. I pulled the oil filter carrier, swapped out all the o-rings with new ones, replaced the drain plug, installed a new Mann filter, installed about 8.3 quarts of Mobil 1 Euro 0W-40, dropped it .... nothing new here. If the ML55 ever had a plastic front lower pan like the last benz -- a GL450 -- it's long gone. But that sure did make the oil change easy.
Double checked everything, cleaned up, got in ... it turned over for maybe two seconds and then ... "START ERROR" !
Repeat 2x.
Oil level/quality sensor?
Checked the oil level. After turning over it was a bit below max. Added in the last fractional quart for the full 8.5. Let it settle. Checked level with the dipstick -- just a hair below max.
Tried again. "START ERROR".
Waited ten minutes. "START ERROR".
Locked, unlocked, locked, unlocked. Tried again. No change.
Removed good batteries from second key remote. Installed in the one I'd been driving around with and which had last unlocked the car before the batteries died. Locked, unlocked, locked, unlocked.
Started just fine and hums like a big sewing machine.
The ML55 doesn't have a visible anti-tow display notice like the GL450 did.
Was the "START ERROR" the result of an anti-tow feature and a timeout/reset interval/procedure, or was it because the key that had unlocked the car died and I locked it with a different key?
