Gas leak on engine compartment....

I just finished a 2,000 miles trip on my 2008 ML63 and at the end of the trip I could smell gasoline coming from the engine compartment. I took the top cover from the engine and could see gasoline on the drivers' side directly in front of the air filter box (see picture). Does anyone knows what this part does and if it is as simple as replacing it? I assume this does not happen frequently as it would pose as a serious fire hazard on these cars.

Would check the part by starting the vehicle and looking for signs of leakage. If the part is tight and its leaking then the part is failing and must be replaced as the engine heat will ignite the fuel and totally wreck your day. Good luck.

The problem was the fuel pressure sensor and it was not the sensor itself, it was a O ring failure. I really don't understand how Mercedes lets something as simple as an O ring become a week link that could cause an engine fire. I am sure they have revised these sensors on newer models . The engine was soaked with fuel. Mercedes wanted over $100.00 for the sensor so I just got a new O ring (MB would not sell just the O ring) for $1.00. All is well now.
