ML63 break in...

I know this has been discussed in other threads, but I checked with the GM and salesman at my dealership and they both said no break in is needed. MB runs these engines hard after they're built and before they are put in the cars to test them for problems. They said that was 20+years ago you had a break in. Nowadays these engines are tested and broke in before they arrive at the dealership. They were sent to AMG classes and told this. Anyone else heard this?

many AMGs and MBs
I do not believe that to be the case. MB and AMG still put a break-in sticker in the top left of the windshield when new. Of course the engines are run and tested prior to being installed but they do not get heat cycled enough to constitute a full break-in. So in the interest of longevity they ask for more.
That being said the ECU records rpm, temp, etc so not following the break-in could potentially void your warranty.
There are also other things, transmission ,differentials, tires etc. that do require some break-in for optimal performance and durability.
On my visits to AMG and the engine facility I have never been told that there is no break-in needed.
With Porsche that is not the case, run them hard they claim....
Go for some fun short and long kinda boring rides holding back as best you can and break-in will be over in no time.

Over the years with buying various cars (from different manufacturers) I've noticed a trend away from this "break-in" period. It used to be very critical with new engines but there seems to be less of a need now, especially with electronic automatic transmissions. These transmissions and ECU's are so smart now that they wont allow you to redline or strain an engine beyond specs, etc. One dealer even told me that there used to be a special "break-in" oil they used that needed to be changed but no longer use that. Not sure about that but over the years I've heard more and more people recommend just driving it like you normally would but give it a chance to warm up before hitting redline and change your oil after first 500-1000 miles just for precaution.

Just follow the rules for 1,000 miles, then hammer down. I couldn't wait but now have about 4,000 miles. Enjoy it! n
