16 E550 Cab, 2003 Ram bright red crewcab 4x4 we call Clifford :)
LOL, understood, we've only had the ML for less than a week, did an impromptu 0-60 last weekend. Stopped on a side road, power braked it just a little while my wife got ready with the iphone stopwatch.... I hit it and she gets startled and drops the phone! I saw it go to 5sec on the floor when i hit 60 LOL too funny..... we where giggling like a couple of little girls...
Hmmm, looking outside and of course she stole the car again....
I spoke with service rep and master tech at the MB dealership today and found out some unfortunate (albeit interesting information). The ML63 AMG has a rated towing capacity of 7200lbs. HOWEVER, the actual "Tongue Weight Rating" (downward weight on the hitch itself) is only 496 lbs b/c of the rear Air Suspension. This means that I am not sure if I will be able to town my race car as it technically probably cannot support the downward weight of the hitch I assume on an enclosed Aluminum trailer.
The Master test said it all depends on the balance of the trailer, but most will place more weight on the nose obviously rather than the rear depending on how close to the front or rear the wheels are.
Has anyone else run into this issue or actually towed a car/decently heavy boat with an ML63? The extra low tongue weight rating has me seriously concerned I cannot use the ML63 for this type of towing application afterall.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Hi there everyone.
I know I'm picking up on this thread years after the original conversation but I have a similar question.
I have a 2014 vintage AMG ML 63. I'm trying to see what my towing capacity is. The booklet that comes with the car says 6,724lb. I see the originator of the thread talked to Mercedes and heard 7,200lb (which would solve my problem). I'm wondering if there's I'm missing with respect to this discrepancy.
Many thanks.
I posted in this thread back on 12-24-2014, when I was then looking at a new 2015 ML63 AMG to use as a tow vehicle to tow a car to the track. Since then, I did a bunch of research on towing, bought the 2015 ML63, used it to tow 5200 lbs (GTW) at 600 lbs (TW). No issues - towing was effortless. I then bought a new 2017 GLE63 AMG, and continue to tow the same trailer and car. Still, no issues. With the 295/R35 tires, I run the pressures based on the max loading spec (cold), and just keep an eye on them to keep them under the tire manufacturers max pressure spec (hot).
ML63 factory hitch for sale on craigslist Fort Myers FL. With harness... Mechanical stuff is easy. Dealer can program the rear SAM module, I'm told for $150/175.
