ML63 W164 - Multiple *Bangs* when accelerating or reversing?

ML63 W164 - Multiple *Bangs* when accelerating or reversing?
Hello,
I have a ML63 2006 W164 that is having a problem, when I accelerate fast (above 2000rpm) the car makes loads of small bangs from the front centre left or the car. It does the same when reversing.
I cannot pull out or overtake basiclly go above the speed of a typical Honda Jazz driver without it making these bangs.
Does anyone have an idea what it could be?
