"Next year, the Mercedes plant in Alabama will be humming with activity as it begins to assemble three new models. Coming out of the Crimson Tide State will be the second-generation M-class, the next G-class, and the all-new R-class. All three SUVs will be on the same platform but will distinguish themselves with individual styling and mechanicals. The G-class will no longer be the expensive military-grade vehicle it is today, but it supposedly will retain much of its off-road prowess. The R-class, based on the GST concept, will be the sportiest of the utes and will come in two wheelbase lengths. The M-class will surely continue to be the darling of soccer moms, but an AMG version boasting 476 horsepower from a new 32-valve, naturally aspirated V-8 should lure enthusiasts. All three will debut at the Detroit show in January, arriving in showrooms as the year goes on."
