2009 ML63 Hood Grille Vents Purpose

I have a 2009 ML63 and it appears that the grille vents on the hood on the passenger side is connected/open to a "box" in the engine compartment. The driver side is not. What the heck is this? Does not appear to be engine air filter as that comes through the front nose kit.

If it's the box i'm thinking of, its where your cabin filters live.

The passenger side vent opens to the intake pipe (164-830-00-53) through the inlet duct screen (164-831-00-58). If you take the pipe off, you will see the top of your cabin filters, which are changed by taking apart your glove box for some dumb reason.
