SUV - 1st Snowfall -Fail

Go out to start my ML63 looking forward to trying her new Blizzaks out in the snow, load her up with some stuff for errands, sit down and hear a weird noise, car dies. Start back up, no noise but a strange smell and battery light goes on. Look under the hood and the power steering pulley is laying down under the pump and the belt is under it a bit shredded! 50,000 miles and the power steering pump disintegrates? It doesn't look like a very enjoyable task down there either, sure this is going to cost me a few $$$... is this a common failure?

To close this the bearing in the pump seems to have seized and the motor pretty much just tore the pulley off the shaft! New pump and belt installed, all seems fine now... got away under $1K so not horrible.
