12 ML63 starter went bad
Brought the ML63 in for a few little things while it's still under warranty.... occasionally it starts slow... aka cranks slow then catches...
Just got the call, they are replacing the starter, Service Writer say's that the starter is susceptible to heat and they fail... say's i am getting a new style that won't do this...
Anybody heard of this ?
Oh and they have to pull the motor to replace it.... WOW

Pull the engine to change the starter!! no way there having you on. I would look at the battery first its AGM type and expensive, does the stop start work ok?
See if you can find the face book group ml63 amg.

looking at the service history it's had 4 batteries, the last being the day i Picked it up a few month's back. This will be the 2nd starter....
I wonder about the whole we have to pull the motor to swap a starter as well...
gonna do a post and see if there are any mb mechanics out here to confirm that...

I have wis so will look later.
why 4 batteries? they are AGM and expensive so genuine only, the date should be stamped on one post on it, should last years, mine on the original at 67K and still fine

Yup motor/tranny come out the bottom..... just got back from the dealer and checked it myself.
Engine mount is in the way....
Spoke to the mechanic, nice guy, they happen to have a table for the SLR to drop the engine/tranny on so it's "easier" to do....
The starters fail by being slow to turn..... has been mis-diagnosed as battery issue a few times...
Also I'm guessing this was initially owned by snowbirds and it sat in a garage for month's at a time... in Florida this is a battery killer if you don't use a trickle charger....

No video of slow start, The symptom was you hit the button and you can hear the motor start to turn then it stops for a 1/4 of second and suddenly starts...
If your old school just think motor with really high compression and the starter fighting to turn it over...
Talked to the mechanic and he said the down pipe had to come off to get the starter out, we are waiting on new gasket... so i will be without this weekend
They said this would be a about $4k if i had to pay for it.... ick...

Went to look today and it's done but while the mechanic had it in the air he saw nails in 2 tires.... ug....
So still it sits in the garage....
Should have tires monday....
But it was cool to look underneath, it's really clean and no damage under the front spoiler etc....

FINALLY.... 2 new tires and got it back yesterday.... so happy and no new/weird noises
Cost to put in a new starter with the motor coming out.... $3k
Glad this was done under warranty...

UPDATE:
Starter was certainly bad, no more slow start, starter and motor turn over quickly and it starts right up...
Or of course it could have been a bad chassis ground that got resolved when the motor was taken out
