ML63 Biturbo (W166) transmission "personality"

Hi all,

I am currently looking to purchase a W166 Ml63, however have some questions about the transmission - I understand it is still a torque converter driven 7G, but is it any different from what was available in the W211 M156 E63 (pre-MCT)?

One of the things I didn't like about the 7G in my W211 M156 E63 was it's laziness of shifting - in many ways I felt it let the car down.

I have watched plenty of videos online and it seems the gearbox does shift quite snappy in the ML63; is it due to a more modern iteration of the 7G, software, different valvebody etc?

MB transmissions are bad. It's the way it is. The 7G is sluggish on a good day. It's rough, hesitant and sluggish on a bad day. MB makes poor boxes.

So no, the 7G in a pre-MCT W166 or W211 are no different from each other. The newer W166 version will have more field fixes. Not sure if it was the 7G or 5G that has a well-known reputation for electrical connector leaking oil from the junction with the transmission housing.

Hi Aussie E63,

I have owned a W166 ML63 for about a year now and i find the box very responsive to throttle inputs and quick to shift especially in sport mode. It's all subjective i guess, but compared to my V8 Holden(6L80E) which i find very slow to kickdown i think it's a great transmisssion and chalk & cheese to the GM product.

It's not Ferrari quick but suitable for what it is. Leaps and bounds better than the old 5 speed transmission.
