FOR SALE: iPhone cradle
I have the iPhone cradle for Mercedes-Benz for sale. It fits the older iPhone perfectly. The iPhone 3G fits, but not perfectly. It will charge both phones. You can see in the picture below it is charging my iPhone 3G.
Part number: A 204 820 23 51
$300 shipped
I had it installed in my W211, but I think I'm gonna go back to Nokias.

I believe you need to have a phone kit installed of some kind in your car. Either a UHI kit or MHI kit (not sure about this though).
I have a UHI kit and Euro COMAND and it integrates very well. All numbers are downloaded and distinguished from each other.

Because you said you were going to go back to Nokias, would you consider letting your phone go with the cradle. And what would be the combined price. Also, I assume your unit does not have the wireless connection to the phone (where it senses the phone, even when not in the cradle) is that correct.

You are correct to assume that the cradle does not have a wireless connection. The phone must be in the cradle to pair. A bluetooth puck will work like you are asking.

You can play music through it if you hook it up to your iPod connection kit with the right connectors.
It also charges

Yes it will work. I and others have used it successfully with COMAND systems in the US as long as you have the Multi Handsfree Interface (MHI) kit of Universal Handsfree Interface (UHI) kit installed.
