Just a basic code reader so I can know what caused the CEL before I visit the dealer.

As Plutoe mentioned above, any generic OBD-II code reader will do if all you want to do is simply read generic codes.

Please note that generic code readers can't read MB specific codes. I use iCarsoft code reader (it's around $150).

I changed my plugs yesterday and didn't get one of the boots on quite enough, so when I started the car It set off the Chicken Light (check engine light) of course. ( and the rough idle , and that sound when you don't get a plug wire back on .
When I finished and got everything right, I ran up to Auto Zone for a quick scan, and of course It showed the "P0300, and the P3006 for the misfire, plug no.6. (the one by the oil dipstick)
but clear the codes for you ...although I was happy there were no other codes...
Off I went to Oriellys for the 70 dollar Bosch 1000, ...it reads the same errors as down the street but doe's not clear /erase them....and I still have the CEL light on...
I said all that to say.............I had no luck clearing my Check Eng. Light with the 70 dollar Bosch OBDII reader,

2013 ML350 276 engine 58K

incidentally I bought MB plugs at Tampa MB dealership, 26.00 apiece ,MB oil 7.50 a qt, , MB Oil Filter 28.00
the original plugs looked ....well ...uniformly had slight deposits...50k is a good time to change them
