Pop goes the Diesel
Driving back from dinner with family @70 on turnpike I heard a loud bang...lost power and every light in dash lights up.
99624 miles on 100000 mile extended warranty...but 21 days past the 6 years.
Oil was changed the week before...at dealer who also found a leak at the filter housing...which they replaced 'under warranty'.
MB USA customer care has offered $1500 toward repair...or $3500 toward new vehicle. This is unacceptable.
I'm sure another service error by the dealer contributed to this damage but they are not taking any responsibility.
Any input from others with same problem or suggested path for resolution would be truly appreciated.
Thanks
Mike

Please keep us informed on how this goes down. Less than 30 days out of warranty, you should hopefully be able to get them to repair the engine...

Let's see here... you've been bashing MB and the service at the dealership for as long as you've been active on this forum, but you now expect one of them to pick up the tab for an out-of-warranty repair that is not their responsibility to fix? Yeah - good luck with that one...

to the incident, you can say that prior to bringing my car to this dealer i had no issues with the vehicle and you may or may not need a lawyer unless you go
up the food chain at the dealer and speak with a manager, since i think some places have service warranty. One thing how i can relate but was screwed over was
that i took my former beemer to a dealer in LA (SM BMW if case any of you are in LA) and when i took it from the dealer one day, same day the engine overheated
as i rushed to get it back there but was a few miles short, i called the dealer to inform them and at this time i had no AAA membership to cover the cost of the tow so i paid
16x dollars for the tow. They were supposed to reimburse me, but the SA was gone and and the uppers were like you have to take the issue with him so..

Update
The service manager called and identified the fault as bad oil pump..a known defect he says..and not related to the service they performed on the oil filters housing seal..less than 500 miles previous. Hmmm
I had never seen this fault discussed and does anyone know if there is a service bulletin about this issue ?

A faulty oil pump would have resulted in a warning light on the dash or something. I imagine you would've seen it light up while driving...

Loud bang and catastrophic failure.
I am afraid the service manager is covering for their error once again.

I'd bet on it. You should bring it to another MB dealer and have the engine taken apart and documented. Better yet, lawyer up, he'll know what to do

Stopped at dealer to see if there were any codes to indicate problem but nothing prior to catastrophic failure.
Still no clue why

I really think you should spring for a tear-down to find out what let go. Videotape the whole process as well. If they won't allow you to be there, then take it to a well-respected indy and videotape it there instead.
