c230 kompressor
???all new to me

just purchased a 2004 c230 kompressor and need to pass smog. the check engine light came on 2 days after we bought the car, and the shop which worked on the car said to expect it since the car has not been driven for over a year. they suggested to drive 50 miles and the CEL shd switch off and it shd be ok to be smogged. it didn't after 60 miles. they suggested to disconnect battery for 30 sec. that didn't work. we drove it back there and they reset something and the CEL turned off. went to get it smogged the following day, and it failed on SYSTEM MALFUNCTION LIGHT. everything else, including emission tests passed. shop said to drive car longer, and this was the same advice from the smog people. how long do we drive it, are there any specific steps to do before we take it back to be smogged?
