2003 CLK 500
CLK Heater problems.

Hi all.
I'm new to the forum and new to MB ownership so be gentle with me 😏
Aoplogies if this has already been dealt with but if it has I can't find it after a lot of searching.
I have a 2003 CLK 500 (UK spec)
The heater / AC fan doesn't start.
If I put 12v across the fan it runs fine.
I've tried a new regulator (kindly loaned by my local dealer), fan still didn't run.
I'm getting 12v to the larger two of the four wires going to the regulator. So I assume this means my fuse is fine.
Before it stopped working altogether for a while the fan would run at full speed for a few seconds then stop.
The display reads as normal, adjusting the temp when in auto the display of the fan speed goes up and down a bit. In manual I can change the displayed speed from zero to max. None of which actually starts the fan.
Does all of the above mean my control unit has gone? Is there anything I can do to avoid buying a new one?
