r107 faulty indicators

Auto-electrical guidance sought please.

My 1989 560SL (40,000 miles) has developed an erratic indicator fault. It does not occur systematically but most often occurs with the engine running and with headlights on.

If I select an indicator it often won't work(neither the external indicator lights nor the dashboard green indicator display)and once they have decided not to work they stay not working.
To get them working again I either
-have to turn the engine and headlights off and then start up again,
-or; if I put the hazard warning lights on (which function correctly) an indicator (either left or right) will then start working correctly once; if I turn it off and try it again it won't work and again I have to try the hazard light trick or stop the engine.

Faulty relay?
Switch?

any thoughts welcome please.
