Transfer case repair requires transmission replacement?
Good evening,
I drive a 2012 ML350 Bluetec that just hit 100k last week. I heard a creaking sound on rapid acceleration a few times and brought it in (non-dealer shop only works on Mercedes), and learned the transfer case is going bad, though this requires full transmission replacement at cost of 7-8k (estimate).
1. Has anyone experienced this?
2. More importantly, why can’t the transfer case be replaced with replacing the entire transmission?
My plans include buying a replacement car and sending the ML to live out it’s days at the family vacation property as a low mileage alternative to rentals. I’ve thought of trading it in but don’t think there is much value st the current mileage.
Any my comments are appreciated,
Mike

yes I do, certified by MB many years, has worked for dealerships and has had his own shop totaling over 40 years. I’m going in Friday for axle boots and will ask more questions. Do you think the TC alone can be replaced?
