HELP! Throwing oil after oil change!!

99 ML 320
HELP! Throwing oil after oil change!!
I changed the oil, 99 ML320 -what could go wrong !
While I had the filter out, I thought....(haha I was thinkn') Why not put the new oil down the oil filter tube, where the filter sits.
I pour 5 qts. down the oil filter housing, put cap on, put the other 3 where the oil is supposed to go , close everything up....
start vehicle......hear oil gushing out of the botton of vehicle......OMG!!!! Big mess!
Check stick ( Idid not before)....just slightly above the star on bottom of stick.....
Put in the 3 qts. I have on hand....start car ....MORE OIL COMMING OUT UNDER CAR!...
Now 4 hours later....I add 5 QTS. (old oil)....looks good on stick now.....but I dont want to start the car...tonight...
WHAT HAPPENED??????
Did the oil not go to the pan? When I filled it thru the oil filter housing??????
Did I blow a gasket ....or something......( it appears to be holding , but I dont want to heat it up till I clean the engine and headers ....
