Old Vs. New

Hello, I am new to the forum and the MB world. I have always loved the G class. My wife has aswell. As of late I am in a position where I am thinking I may finally be able to get into one of these utility legends. I have done a great amount of research the last year but still have some serious questions about which G would be best for me.

I have come across several early 90s g-wagens that are a little more refined than their 80s counter parts. They have the full time 4WD and the 3 lockers which I like and yet also are a little more comfortable having leather, seat warmers etc. Yet they also seem to be more basic than the 2002 and on models (less electronic components, which I like.)

Here’s my 1st question. If I can get my hands on a 1990-94 g-class with roughly 100k miles, that appears to be running mechanically correct and has no to little rust for roughly 20k is that worth it?

Question 2, which engine in the early 90s is the most reliable and efficient and what mpgs can I expect? Desiel or petrol?

Question 3, would I be better off getting into a 2002-05 with the same mileage for 25-30k? Being more electroniy reliant and less fuel efficient.

Lastly, I am not the most mechanically capable person, I know how to change fluids, brakes, and basic maintenance, I’ve replaced simple sensors and headlights before, nothing serious. Tomorrow am going to be replacing the driveshaft bearing on my ‘90 Isuzu Trooper. With that being said am I getting in over my head getting into a 90s G, or even a used 2002-05?

Please let me know what you all think. I appreciate any feedback. It means a great deal to me as me and my new wife have always absolutely loved the G-Class and would love to get our hands on a good one. Thanks you all!
