SC pulley gapping proves useful
I don't claim to be an expert MB service guy, however when I have a positive, possible useful experience I want to share it.
I just purchased an 03 SL55 AMG and needed to replace the SC bearings which I did. I learned about the importance of gapping the pulley after I installed the new Nachi bearings, so I ordered a set of shims off eBay because I was experiencing horrible SC engagement issues that have been eliminated by replacing the worn shims which had less than .023 inch gap and installed 4 new shims that changed the gap to ,040 inches. The engagement of the SC is beautiful now--smooth and effortless. This $20 shim purchase was well worth it.
