I personally have an iPhone, but generally if the contacts don't sync, then the permissions weren't given on the phone or contact sharing isn't enabled. When you paired your phone, did you get a prompt that asked for permissions for the car to access your contacts? When the phone is plugged in and you are using Android Auto, then Bluetooth is disabled, so you won't see the contacts in the car anyway.
