Hi, from suburban Detroit!
I just picked up a 1998 W140 S320 SWB, Smoke Silver over Parchment, with 106k miles. I think the vehicle is absolutely pristine. The selling dealer/collector completed a trim-out respray and had all four wheels refurbed, adding new tires. The previous owner (since 2004), had M-B replace the head gasket, oil pump and a smattering of other goodies over the past 5 years. I found the car ~1 month ago, about 40 minutes from my house, but I put it on standby, thinking I'd hold out for something just as nice, but with less miles.
Last weekend, I actually drove ~2.5 hrs from home to see a 47k mile LWB example that previously sold on BaT 2x in 2019. The high-res pictures on BaT documented what I thought was the same caliber of car. But in-person, it was devastatingly disappointing, with the selling dealer not even spending the $300 to detail it. Think sticky Coca-Cola stains, dirty carpets and unwashed exterior. It was a far cry from the pictures. Frankly, it clearly wasn't loved enough for me. So on the ride home, I quickly called the prior dealer, confirmed he still had the car and made the deal.
I've named the car Margaret, after its 93-year-old prior owner. I hope to drive it for many years to come.
I'm looking forward to learning/contributing all I can on the forum.
Many Happy Miles.
Matt from Michigan
