Traffic Sign Assist woes

I picked up my 2015 C220d AMG line estate yesterday, and I'm delighted with it. So much more tech than on my old 2011 C class. However, one thing is bugging me... my old car had Traffic Sign Assist, which I thought was brilliant, and I was looking forward to adding that to the head-up display in my new car. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be an option despite the fact that the necessary cameras are fitted in the windscreen module. Does anyone know if this can be resolved somehow, or do I just have to live without it? Thanks in advance.

At least the newer Traffic Sign Assist systems need more than just cameras. They also require the full navigation system. Recognizing a traffic sign with the camera is only half the story. There are often adjacent roads with different speed limits, highway exits and other turn offs that have posted lower speed limits, it isn't just enough to recognize the traffic sign, it also needs contextual information from the navigation system to know which road you are actually driving on in order to show you the correct traffic signs. This is especially important in conjunction with the driver assistance package as DISTRONIC can automatically adopt the current speed limit, so you don't want the car to suddenly slow down if it accidentally reads the speed limit sign of a road parallel to the highway for example. Therefore GPS and road information is important. Also many A and B roads don't necessarily have speed limit signs, so the system needs to know what type of road you are driving on and what the prevailing speed limits are in the current country, in order to show you the correct speed limit. Despite all of this there are still occasional false readings, but for the most part the newer systems work great in conjunction with an updated navigation map in the car.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to write a comprehensive reply, it's much appreciated. My car has full satnav (with speed limit info) and seems to have a generally high specification, so I'm still at a loss as to why it's not fitted with Traffic Sign Assist. The manual says it's only available on cars with the twin cameras behind the mirror, which mine has. Ah well, main dealer here I come. Wish me luck!
