2014 Windshield "de-laminating"?
Picked up my 2014 two weeks ago and everything was fine. Started noticing areas on the windshield in front of the cameras that looked "bubbled" or like there were layers separating in the glass. Started to get the "Pre Safe may not function properly...) message which I assume is because the camera couldn't see through bubbles.
Proceeded to get worse and worse and also started in other areas around the edge of the windshield.
In the shop now, have to replace the windshield apparently.
Service department indicated that just got a notice from MB on this issue and all wanted to come take a look.
Any one else have this?
Brian

Completely forgot to get pics! But you'll know when you see it and it will only get worse once it starts.
I'll get more info from the dealer and post what I find out.

S550 windshield
Hi Brian
I have the identical issue. Does your s550 have magic body control. There are additional cameras on top of windshield.
How did the replacement go? Which dealership was it at ? I don't trust most dealers in US.
Thanks
Luke

Have a new 2014 MBS550 Kept getting warning about DTR, etc. not working. First I was told it was interference from other cars, radio stations, airports, etc. Got worse and head repair supervisor noticed delamination in front of camera on windshield. Getting new one next week. Perhaps MB should find a better glass manufacturer for their cars!

They are receiving 17 unit windshields on the 17th, and 53 units on the 19th from ppg for the US for this problem. Had my car sitting at the dealer for a week before I decided to take it back and just have them call me when its ready to be replaced. Going on week 3.

Windshield has been replaced efficiently. Camera works now. I called MB USA to inform MB in Germany about the defective windshields. They said they could not do that and would check with my dealer who is 10/10. The problem needs to be escalated to the manufacturer of the windshields. Even the new one has irregularities on the sides (less than the original) , but at least I am happy that the camera now works.

From a discussion with one of my clients this week, I can assure you that the glass manufacturer (PGW--Former PPG Industries) knows about the problem. My client, who is now retired from PPG & PGW while still doing some consulting for PGW explained to me they know about the issues. He worked in the research and development area of this glass windshield. Apparently the problem has something to do with the different bend angles of the interior piece of glass versus the exterior piece of glass that is separated by the piece of laminate. My client is in the know but I am not a glass tech guy so some of what he was talking to me about was "over my head". I am a finance/accounting/investment/legal guy not a glass researcher like my client.
Just as an FYI--My client explained that the sheet glass for our cars is manufactured in Evansville, Indiana and shipped to PGW's plant in Poland to be bent and "melted" together. The bend angles of the two pieces of glass are bent at different angles and when a rock hits the windshield, the different bend angles are causing the glass to spider shortly after the rock hits the windshield. I used to work in the corporate office of PPG more than 25 years ago and have spent time at places like the old PPG Evansville plant. I still know a lot of people within the PPG/PGW structure.

I wrote Randy Reid today about the problem. He is in Office of Defects Investigation for the US Department of Transportation, NHTSA. If I get an answer about his investigation and enquiry to MBUSA I will post the information.

Hey guys, I took my S550 into the service department where I bought the car because I have a dimple/distortion effect smack dab in the middle of the windshield. The SA was reluctant to replace, but after the tech who sat in the car clearly saw that it was just my car (they compared to another S550 in the shop), the tech convinced her to replace my windshield. Dealer didn't have it, so they took my name and number on a post-it (they didn't write up a work order, which made me apprehensive that they wouldn't do the repair, so I got the tech's info), and told me they would call me when the windshield came in. I don't know how long I should wait until I call the SA back and ask what's going on...
Have any of you experienced problems at all with the windshield after replacement given all the camera systems? Wind noise, etc? Did they replace the little Mercedes sticker at the bottom? Last time I took my E350 to this dealer, I didn't experience any major issues, but they forgot the sticker lol
TIA

S550 Windshield delamination
I am on my fourth windshield for my 2014 S550. There is definitely a manufacturing problem which has not been resolved. My dealership has gone above and beyond to help me; in fact, the SA director has said the windshields are back ordered for some reason. Maybe, they are fixing the basic problem. All of my windshields have had a Mercedes sticker with no wind leaks or camera problems (like it did with the initial windshield).

Just thought I would mention that for about $700.00 over the course of a 3 year/45K lease, I opted for the windshield insurance. A windshield on a new S, with all the electronics and such in there is in the $3,000.00 area. My regular comprehensive policy has $1,000.00 deductible, so I thought this was the way to go. And, I think there is nothing that makes a year or two old car seem like new more than a nice new windshield every now and then.
