Dead Battery

Went out to the garage tonight and noticed my tail lights dimly flickering, got into the car and the car went dead. So is it possible for me to jump it? Is the battery in the trunk or are there jump points under the hood I should use?

Thanks!!

This is a case where you want to read the manual. It probably says things like only jump with another vehicle/battery, not a portable charger/jumper. Follow those instructions carefully.

Thank you. Yeah I found that in the manual. I was also wondering about the jump points under the hood or do I need to use the battery which I'm guessing is in the trunk(manual never specified where it is).

Thanks again!! Bigger question is why my 4 month old battery went dead.

No worries. All is well.

Waiting patiently to find out when my car is going to get produced. No word yet.

This battery is kind of new to Mercedes in which they were trying to save weight and trying something new... It's a lithium-iron battery that can't be stored since it only has a 19day shelf life and cost around $1,000.. I would suggest making an appointment at your dealer but please be aware on the wait of a new one it has to be ordered.

I thought that battery was for the S63 and S65 only. It's from the SLS Black Series.

19 days only ? You gotta have a battery tender in your store then lol
I expected a whole different story though . Longer storage capability , longer stamina and life span

I share your pain. Originally, my car was scheduled to be built today, June 24th. I learned yesterday that my build date has been pushed back to next Wednesday, July 2nd. No reason given.

Is Mercedes really using litium ion batteries? That's the same type of battery that's caused the new Boeing 787 so much trouble!

It's a lot less risk than a hybrid. Or a Tesla.

It is interesting that you bring up the 787 Dreamliner.

While a bit off topic, who is and who is not, getting on that plane.

Not me... although I do understand the odds. I need them to be in service for a couple more years.

They find defects with aircraft for decades after a new design is released. Nothing you can do about it unless you stick to flying aircraft that have been around for at least a couple of decades like 737s.

Every laptop, cellphone and tablet on the plane has a Li-ion battery. The chances are greater that a Vaio laptop will combust than an avionics battery.

It's not the technology but how it was originally applied or what environment it was in with respect to these aircraft.

Any Li-ion battery can catch fire if it's asked to deliver too much current, as when they're shorted. And any application can fail and short out the battery. That's true for a laptop, a Tesla or a Dreamliner.

All Li-ion batteries have internal current-limiting circuitry to deal with such circumstances. It was this limiter that failed in the Dreamliner, the Sony laptops and some hybrids and Teslas. The problem is well understood. All of these batteries were reengineered with much more robust current limiters. It's not a matter of ensuring that the battery won't see excessive current draw in its environment; it's about assuming it will and ensuring the battery deals with it gracefully. I think they've got this nailed.

Dead battery - my fault

2015 S550. Last week, I left the ignition in ACC mode after closing the sunroof while car parked in the driveway. Found this out when I went to put car back in garage. Car was DEAD. Nothing on instrument panel or anywhere else. Panic! Hooked up charger (with AGM setting) to jump posts under hood. After several hours, no help and bad battery symbol from charger. Read forum and found a reference to the need to jump start vs try to recharge the battery if “dead”. So I did that. When I hooked up jumper cables, dashboard came to life. It took a while for the other car to charge the S enough to crank, but in 5 minutes, it was running again. Dash said not to drive, but let it idle. So I did that for about half an hour. Shut car off. Restarted later and got battery symbol on dash and message Saying see operators manual. Found out battery not fully charged and need to charge or drive. Hooked charger back up and successfully charged overnight. All appears to be good. Other know more for sure, but there is obviously some kind of circuitry that prevents you from charging the battery if below some voltage, but it appears to be recoverable. Hope this helps someone else.
