steer assist, distronic and lane keeping
Looking to upgrade to a W222 from my W221 and wondering about how well the lane keeping and steer assist work. Like the idea of this technology but having a hard time finding it in the cars I am looking at. Is it worth the extra cost?

I have all those extras on my 2017 SL and though the systems are improved I am kind of Luke warm as to how well one works. Steering assist only works on extremely well striped hi ways with great striping on both sides of the lane. The part that bothers me is that my SL constantly searches for the center of the lane and the steering wheel moves back and forth correcting for the path ahead even on straight roads. After a time it feels like a drunk steering and since one still has to keep their hands on the wheel the constant minor movement of the steering wheel irritates me. I have turned that function off but enjoy the other features.
The lane keeping function has surprised me a few times when I wander off a lane, looking at the scenery too much, and the car brakes and steers back into the lane! That system works pretty well.
Also like the warning lights in the side mirrors that turn red when someone is in your blind spot and cruise control that keeps a set distance between you and the vehicle ahead.

I actually turn it off in my 222. When I drove home with my new car I thought about giving it a try. Especially since I had 500 miles to drive home. I had Lane assist in my 221 which I also turn off in short order. The system is to intrusive for me IMHO I figured that maybe the 222 had a better system but it's the same.
As for steering assist it worked but as Utopia described it. I didn't like it because steering input was as a sixteen year old was trying to drive. Not smooth at all.
Problem is when I was looking for a car with the options I wanted the Drivers Assistance package was always there.

Well, I picked up a 2015 tonight. It does not have the lane or steer assist. Got a great deal on it though so I am happy. Love all the new features. It does ride a bit louder than my W221 but I suspect that is the run flats.

this is just my opinion but I like Lane assist. I agree it's not perfect and no lines have to be on the road clearly but I appreciate the gentle reminder. You really have to remember to use your turn signals when you change lanes that something that you should do anyway.
I recommend you try it and see what you think
also, it may come as part of another package so you may get it anyway you know how they bundle things together

No. Like others have said, it's worthless if you have to keep placing your hands back on the wheel every 20 seconds, and when you allow it to drive itself for those few autonomous 20 seconds, you might be accused of texting while driving as the car sways back and forth trying to figure out where the center of the lane is. The only time I use this feature is when I'm in bumper to bumper traffic at less than 20mph, it is practically autonomous. I've gone a mile or two and never touched a pedal or the steering wheel. But nevertheless , it's not worth it right now as of the 2017 models.
