Help Me Identify this Vehicle
In August 1988, in the village of Lodwar in northern Kenya, I saw what might have been a Mercedes-Benz HG 80 single-body truck. It was outfitted for rugged overland travel - 4WD, winches front and rear, perhaps ten inches of clearance beneath the massive differentials, and set up to ford rivers several feet deep. The cargo bin was roofed with a canvas canopy, a spare tire was mounted underneath, between the long frame members, just behind the cab. The short cab sat above the engine with seats for the driver and co-driver, with perhaps a third seat between them. There was a platform on the roof of the cab which provided insulation from the equatorial sun and, in this case, carried a second spare tire.
I'm interested in learning about the probable size of the engine, its available horsepower and torque, and about what the gearing might have been, and I want to verify that this could have been an HG 80.
