Aftermarket ECU compatible with OEM TCU?

I am planning to replace the ECU of my 1999 E280 with an aftermarket standalone unit. I was told that this is not possible because the autotrans control unit needs to be plugged into the ECU. Is this true? Are there any other solutions? (Other than changing to a manual). Thanks!

Hi mackchee,
did you ever do this, or get an answer if asked from another forum?
