I think Mercedes Benz already provide cold air intakes for the SL and E500. If you want a "warm air" intake, there are probably some cone filter kits out there.

You're most likely going to have to fabricate one. its pretty simple actually, just get some pipe to match the diameter of your MAF, design the bends to go from the MAF to an opening behind the bumper, and try to make as few bends as possible and keep away from extreme heat. Heat wrap will also be a good idea. I've been wanting to do this for a while, but some paint issues are keeping me from doing it.

I have a GruppeM intake for my W210.
I don't know if it will fit your W124.
If you are interested, we can try it.

Now you know, and knowing is half the battle. Though Mark covered the gist of it, here's a brief article if you want to know more.

Not sure about a 500SL, but the 500E/E500, most upgrades for a cold air intake involve removing the headlamp wash wipe, buying new panels for the space under the headlights and having a big hole cut in them, with mesh behind.

Did it on my 500E and it looked great. Cost about $150-200 painted.

Here is a Renntech car with them:

BRABUS used a similar setup on its W124 EV12, and of course I've seen various owners' interpretation of this mod. The question is, did it make a difference? Seems like it should be good for a few ponies, especially at higher speeds.

How's that RENNtech beast treating you? I guess only a truly unique monster like that could make you forget about your 500.

The Renntech is quite a rocket. Not so nice just for tooling around in as the 500E was. I sure miss the 500. Nothing quite like a 500E as an everyday car. Just can't drive the Renntech everyday like you could the 500E.
