DiesOtto - new engine from MB
This is translation from article published this morning on interia.pl -news webside from my home town in Poland. Please forgive me if I made any mistakes. Here it goes:

Mercedes just informed, it is developing new engine, which will combine best characteristics of gasoline engine and diesel, high power output, torque and low fuel consumption.
Invention called DiesOtto ( from lastnames of inventors R. Diesel - diesel engine and Nikolaus Otto - four stroke gas engine) will be powered by gasoline, w/ fuel injection straight to cylinders. working on princeples of diesel engine. Under heavy load and during start-up spark plugs will be still used. During normal operation in low and mid range rpms high compresion will ignite fuel-just like in diesel engines.
In order for engine to work MB developed variable comprasion ratio system.
Mercedes did not disclose any details so far how they did it.
.... First prototype has 4 cylinders displacing 1.8L. .....
It is equipped with turbo, variable valve timing and all other good stuff.
Prototype is producing 238hp and 295 ftlb of torque, w/ fuel consumption of 39 mpg. ( tested in S-class ).
MB did not disclose when new powerplant will be available, so far various components of DiesOtto will be implemented into engines currently in production.
