Question Advice for '88 560 SEC for a newbie

I have been told that my normal 560 can't be upgraded to AMG performance for under $20k. Seems that compression is lower among other issues; cams, lifter etc. Apparently it would cost a fortune in replacement parts. I think Kleeman wants $25K. I have looked for a used AMG 560 motor, one shop told me MB only made a 5.0 liter that year, but I'm pretty sure I have seen an 88 AMG.

My SEC has 120k miles, everything works and is one of the most beautiful cars I have ever owned, I have wanted one for years, but I do want more performance. Does anyone the best sources near St. Pete, Florida for headers, exhaust, engine/trans and suspension upgrades?
I would appreciate your advice

Check with Jonathan at the archives at www.mbcoupes.com and at the W126 section at www.benzworld.com

He is in Atlanta, but goes to Florida sometimes and is possibly the best source within a thousand miles of you who is a TOTAL expert on these coupes.

A good guy too. Totally into SEL/SEC performance.

(post #13 for sample post/info. This is THE source for W126 info on these cars these days...sign up there!!)

Here he is campaigning his 560SEL at Road Atlanta. Pay attention to the car as it runs about 130 mph down the backstretch.

Think about Remus, eibach/H&R, first gear start, 2:82 LTD SLIP Gleason-Torsen diff, Bilstein comfort or HD, Euro Tri Y stainless steel & headers and downpipes, and better crossovers, etc. before tearing into the motor.

Those kinds of mods won't get you ANYWHERE near $20k and you will still have a real street sweeper for the $$$.

Good luck. They are beautiful, though not the fastest cars around on accelleration anymore. They'll still do over 140 any day. I know that, I just did recently.

good luck
