Catalytic Converter Removal on my 97 SL500

Is it a bad idea to get rid of it? Their are no emissions issues where I am and I want to make sure it wont cause the check engine light to come on or have a negative effect on performance. I'm putting on a Supersprint exhaust and will be getting rid of the resonator but am unsure of the catalytic converter. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

so you're basically taking everything off? like straight through piping? I'm pretty sure your 02 sensor's going to go off. Are you sure it's not illegal to take out the cat in your state? Anyways, there's the issue of backpressure in this situation. If you don't have enough backpressure, you will LOSE hp.
