Why MB is slow with Variable Valve ???

Does anyone know why MB is slow to adopt Variable Valve technology ???

M271 - Variable Valve just being introduced.
M112 & M113 - No Variable Valve yet to date, correct ???
M281 - Variable Valve ???

The engine was just introduced.
M112 & M113 - No Variable Valve yet to date, correct ???
Those are 3 valve engines and have a single cam shaft for the intake and exhaust valves making it difficult to change the timming on the intake without throwing off the timming of the exhaust and vise versa.
M281 - Variable Valve ??? Thanks
