V8 R170/Crossfire conversion almost done
Hello,
This past week I removed my MB 112 V6 from my Crossfire and installed a V8 113 engine from a CL500. The mechanical work was time consuming but very straight forward. To overcome the electronic issues, I used an unlocked ECU from Beckmann Technologies. to program the ECU we used the MB STAR system raised to developer mode (german language only) and was able to code the ECU to all the other control modules, dash and key as well as to the Chrysler VIN number. We ran into a problem with the shifter which is also part of the immobilization system because the firmware in my CL500 was version F2 and needs to be version F5. Last Friday we sent the ECU back to Beckmann to have the firmware updated and I should have it back tomorrow. The Crossfire is a R170 chassis so everything I did would also apply to the R170 SLK320 and with the correct oil pan to the C and CLK class.

The V6 can use either a Chrysler or Mercedes engine cover but there aren't many choices for the V8, just "Mercedes" or "AMG". I used the cover that came with the engine. It does freek a few people out that don't know Crossfire's already have Mercedes engines in them. Putting a Mercedes V8 into a Crossfire is just a bolt in swap but puting a Chrysler engine like a Hemi would be almost impossible becuase of the fabrication involved and getting all the electronic control units to play together.

Interested in doing the same conversion to my '04 Crossfire........your info. was very useful. Any additional tips of info ?? I've started looking for an engine and am in the initial phases so anything will help.
How do you like the driveability once the conversion is done ??
thanks,

Thanks guys. Another guy just finished putting an AMG 55 Kompressor engine in a Crossfire. That car is a total monster! If any of you want a V8 SLK it is the exact same swap. The only difference in converting an SLK or Crossfire is that you don't have to figure out how to get the Chrysler VIN number into the MB V8 computer. Rcompart on Crossfireforum.org is now offer the conversion.
Other than the exterior styling and tire sizes, there is NO difference between a Crossfire and a R170 SLK.

You should have sourced a 600 v12 engine, then it would have been the fastest crossfire. Did you change the tranny along with the engine and was there any issues with the rear differential?

I don't think the V12 would have fit and the computer issues would have been much harder if not impossible. I did not have to change the rear end or trans. I have 10,000 miles on the swap with no problems. If the trans fails I will install the SRT6 / SLK32 Trans which is the same as a V8 trans. If I blow the rear end I will install a C55 rear end with a quaiffe dif.

Nice work. I've always liked the looks of the car but thought they didn't have enough "go." Now, that problem is solved. And, I didn't know they originally had MB V6's. Guess you learn something new everyday.

A guy on the Crossfire forum is now offering this swap for SLK's and Crossfires. He is using 55 Kompressor engines. The little R170 chassis is a complete monster with the supercharged 55.

Sign on to the Crossfire forum and search member RCompart and send him a PM. he is the guy who built three or four of these. There has been a lot of development since this old thread. You can use any Mercedes 113 engine and make it run just like it came from the factory that way.

A good time to revive this thread. I sold my car and it is now in AZ. A lot of progress has been made on this conversion. you can have everything work fine including the use of a six speed. There are two guys driving six speed Crossfires with 113 MB V8's. I am sure you will find all the info you need on the Crossfire forum.
