Question Short throw shifter replacement

Evosport, Kleemann, anyone who can...

Any chance of developing a short throw kit like this one for our MBs? Specifically my sloppy C7 Sport Coupe.

Never did this so pardon my ignorance but if you have the factory shifter as model, can you machine one just like it but shorter in some dimension to make it shift quicker/shorter? If so then couldn't you take your shifter (or a spare you pickup at the MB dealer) send it to a machine shop like ASP and have them make what you want. If you work with them on a design and it works I would buy one, maybe do it as part of a group buy to offset the design costs.

The difference this shift kit made on my friends e36 was remarkable. An even shorter throw from C7 would be nice too.

A few write ups that I have read said one of the key differences is the one-piece machined lobe / shaft. The hardened plastic in our stock shift assemblies wears and "ovalize", making shifts sloppy, and inconsistent.

I don't know the specifics well enough to state for sure what needs to be done to get this made. Evosport?

With no disrespect meant to ASP, I'd personally rather see Kleemann or another "mb tuner" take this up and pay a little more in the end. But at this point, I just want my nice shifts back

As you can see, the shifter mechanism in a Coupe is not that simple. You can't simply replace the lever with a different one, you would have to replace the entire assembly. It would end up costing more than it's worth.

Why not just cut a short section out of the stock units shift arm and weld it back together? 1" would make a huge difference.

I wouldn't want to cut the shalf. My thinking was that the most improvement would be obtain through different matterials being used.

Cory, it is hard to tell from the pic. In the pic it just looks like a housing. You can't replace the stick, bushing, etc. from that housing?

Edit- None of the tuners responded so I guess not...dead idea I suppose. Nice thought though.

Nuk - I'm going to bug UUC again about starting up our short shift kit project. They've just been too damn busy on BMW projects to help out, but I'm hoping that I'll be able to bring it back from the dead.
We had talked about a replacement for the mechanism that attaches to the shifter, so that the pivot point is moved, resulting in shorter shifts. They have a similar kit for older gen BMWs which works well. I'll try to call him this week and resurrect the project.

Sorry- Ive been busy arguing with Adam in another thread.

Cutting a 1" section out of the shift arm- which part do you mean, the lever or the rod? In either case the end result is not what you want.

Taking an inch out of the rod would do nothing- only change the relative position of the stick. Taking an inch of the top of the lever would only shorten the lever, reducing the distance traveled of the stick, but decreasing your mechanical advantage over the linkage. Taking an inch out of the lower half of the lever (after the folcrum) would make shifter throws even longer.

What we want here is a shifter with a LONGER arm beneath the folcrum point of the stick. A 1" movement of the TOP of the stick would equal a longer distance travelled by the opposite end of the stick.

The "problem" is that (as illustarted in the previous photo, albeit difficult to see) is that the shift mechanism is a rod AND cable affair. It is not so simple a part as say a WRX or Honda.

The entire C7 or "Evolution" assembly is about $470 from MBZ. Its a great value- why re-invent the wheel? If you have a C7 and its sloppy- you have another problem and should march back to your dealer and have them replace the assembly. Our C230 is crisp and smooth shifting with 20K on the clock.

Thank you for the response Brandon...

I am scheduled to go in next week on the list of items to be inspected is the shifter. I meant it is reall sloppy as *****. And recently, with the clutch pedal COMPLETELY depressed, it wouldn't go into gear. I had to double clutch it.

Other issues, developing lag on acceleration, almost feels like it is getting TOO much fuel and bogs.

Rotation noise that varies with speed from right front wheel... Rotor coning? Bearings?

etc., there are other lesser issues. I think I might need new shocks.
