OBD-II Data Logging

I have some aftermarket headers for my CLK, and I was wondering if the Stainless Steel tubes will be dumping more heat into the engine bay and affecting intake air temps. I purchased a generic OBD-II to usb cable, and plan to use some free software to see what's going on. Proscan looks like a good option. Has anyone here used this, or a similar setup? Does it also work well to read error codes? I've heard I might need a MB specific tool for that...
