Replacing ECU

Do I need to get the MB Star Diagnosis (ODBII) Tool to register my new ECU register in the car before it can be used?

Some mechanic (non MB trained) was telling that my car won't be able to start if I simply just plug out the old and put in the new ECU.

Anybody?

I will be replacing my Kompressor (supercharger) as well, do you think my W203 has to be reset by Star Diagnosis before I can start the engine also?
