E55 Performance Exhaust
I was going to sell my E55 as I have the new model on order and thought it was a good time to get out of the car before the depreciation of the new E class model release hits prices. After 3 weeks of debate I couldn't find a car that I could live with as a daily driver for the 12 mths before my new car arrives. I was then inspired last night as I was surfing the net looking for mods for the E55 and stumbled across the evosport web site. The E55 featured is way cool. It sealed my decision to keep the car, spend some money on it, to make it "exciting" again and damn the depreciation. Anyway sorry for the dribble, one thing I noticed on the car is the stock exhaust appears to be pitiful. The headers look like they would have trouble dealing with a motor with half the capacity of the E55 and the rest of the system doesn't look much better. I have looked but cannot find any "off the shelf" kit from a reputable supplier (i.e. remus etc) to suit. Any suggestions? I am not worried about emissions etc as I will keep the standard system for replacement when I trade/sell the car.
Thks

Thanks, but they only seem to list a rear muffler replacement. I am looking for a system to produce serious hp gains.

Has anyone had any dyno figures comparing exhaust mods?
I am now thinking of removing the resonators and changing to race cats. I cannot find headers anywhere in Australia.

I found a local performance exhaust specialist who pulled apart system to assess upgrade potential.
He advised the following;
Rear muffler and mid muffler are both straight through with very little performance upgrade potential. Mid muffler can be removed or changed to save weight/increase sound. - I am removing.
Secondary cats are actually 3" performance items adapated to 2 1/4" exhaust.
Pre cats suck and are restrictive, having them removed.
Exhaust flange to pre cat pipe is a joke. Appears to be 1 1/2" pipe, complete with severe kinks.
Factory manifold. - Worse than previously mentioned pipe. Rear cylinder in each bank is only one with reasonable gas flow. The other three cylinders are being strangled. I am having a set of headers made to replace.
When he showed me how bad these front components were I was shocked. MB should be embarassed to produce such a poorly designed parts.
I have seen other posts on the boards stating that changing mufflers has very little effect on performance, now I understand why. All the restriction is at the front, before the catalytic converters!
I am getting the car back tomorrow with exhaust mods, then taking to dynotuner on Fri to have ECU remapped to suit new setup.
If anyone is interseted, I will post the results.

Total cost of mods is $4000AUD (approx $2000 US).

I have got the car back now. The computer has not been done yet. The shop I am using, APS, can't fit me in until next week, because the exhaust was a day late and I missed my booking. Damn!!!
However, 0-62.5mph now 5.0 sec consistent which is equiv to 0-60mph approx 4.7 sec. This is an improvement of .25sec over my previous best time. Rear wheel horsepower increased from 270 to 300hp. All of these figures are according to G-tech Pro.
The car now wheelspins all the way through first and fogs up in second too!
I can't wait to get the computer remapped!
I haven't had the opportunity to try some 0-400m runs, but I am hoping for 12's??!!
All this for less than US $2000.....

What exactly did you do to your car?
It seems like everything you said, but I'm not sure about what you did with the headers, you didn't change them, did you?

Completed;
1. Headers
2. front cats removed
3. mid muffler removed
Still to do;
1. Remap computer and optimize for 98RON (US 93 octane) fuel.
2. Change main cats to race items, apparently worth another 5 - 10hp.
3. K&N Air filter. Waiting for parts to arrive.
I'm hoping for another 15-30 RWHP with these additional changes.

Just wanted to see if you were able to get your car on the dyno yet and get some feedback on the power gains produced by your new exhaust.
Any pics would be fantastic.
Thanks,
Jeff

i can't believe u'r tired of the e55 and complaining its boring
. i guess it's like corvette fans going to lingenfelter or calloway. it's never enough...
interesting points on the engine...they are handbuilt...maybe all that restriction is to pass emissions tests?

I'll see if I can get pictures of the front exhaust/pre cat section that was removed so you can see how bad it is. I don't know, but when the E55 was released it was the most poerfulcar in it's class. MBNZ must have determined it wasn't necessary. I'm no expert, but the restrictions don't appear to be related to emissions, just bad engineering..
