Paddle shifter behaviour change?

Hi,
Wondering if there is a method by which you can change how the paddle shifters behave, tune or otherwise?
I have a 2009 ML320 Bluetec, has the 7speed and paddle shifters, but I don't like how they function.
When manually selecting a gear, all it really does is identify the highest gear available for the transmission to choose.
They're also rather slow to respond in general.
Example, when upshifting on heavy acceleration, I can choose to shift at 2000 rpm, but if my foot's in it, it won't shift until redline. So the paddle shifters are useful for downshifting during deceleration, but useless when upshifting.
MB, If you're going to give me paddle shifters, is it too much to ask for to have it *** shift when I tell it to shift?
Thanks!
