M? or ML?

In Mercedes-Benz SUVs, Trucks, Vans, Diesels, Other, why are the W163 and W164 titled as M-Class ? Isn't it supposed to be ML-Class ?
In the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vehicles, they are correctly called as ML55 and ML63.

When referring to "class," it's the M-Class. However as the model name completely with the engine displacement, it's ML.

Is this the only MB that its class is supposed to be called differently than the model name ? Other class is called exactly the same as the model name. G-class is G. SLK-class is SLK. etc. But M-class is ML ? why ?
I thought it was a typo at first but then I checked MBUSA and they call it M-class too. Hmm so I guess nobody knows the reason huh. OK mods, feel free to delete this thread

It is called the ML class on the vehicle to avoid confusion (and a lawsuit) with BMW over the "M". If they called it the M350 or M500 back in 1998 they might have had a problem with BMW, so they added the L to the name, though it is still officially the M-Class. Now why BMW doesn't have a problem with Infiniti calling their cars the M35 or M45 is beyond me.

M
