Simultaneous Systemic Failure 1998 E320 Wagon
Yesterday I turned the A/C on to exercise it a bit. It was not cold, but there was plenty of airflow. When I got home I popped the hood and found some smoke. The smoke dissipated quickly after turning the engine off. It did not have a strong oil or electrical odor per se.
12 hours later I found the car would barely turn over as if it had a very weak battery. It would not start without a charger.
I got the car started, turned the blower fan to a fully off position, and drove the car for a mile. The needle instruments are working fine, but the digital display is very faint and throwing messages like BAS, ABS, etc. (The braking felt fine.) The shifting was clearly odd (not at all at first) and the power steering feels dead. The car began smoking again near the serpentine belt.
Is the a/c bearing going bad and causing too much friction / smoke? If so, why would that cause everything else (power steering, digital display in instrument cluster, shifting) to go funky? Other thoughts?
Thanks!
