Variable Valve Timing

Hi guys
love your posts and great advice
This is my first post and first time owner of a MB 2001 C-180 Classic 2ltr 5sp auto 103k kms
Updated from a s*** box VS Commadore (so many problems ) to what is a truely beautifull vehicle.
I purchased privately and am now thinkin that they've got it's best and now i have to PAY
I have a rattleing occuring on slight accelleration/deccelleration not noticable when bought probabley due to the excitment of a special vehicle for my misses. Anyway i took it today to a reputable mechanic to listen and quickly diognose what the f the noise was,
so he told me we better have a proper looky see and fix it as quote 'THIS COULD COST A LOT and if we dont fix it,it could cost GAZILLIONS'.
He thinks it could be the variable valve timing mechanism
Questiioni How much does this cost to replace and can i do the job myself ?
I live in Wodonga, Australia
Your response/s would be appreciated
Barney
