R already on "special"

I'm still anxiously awaiting the arrival of my R350 (any day now), and have driven others and really like the vehicle. However, I guess they are not selling, because already there is a special lease available on them. THat must be a record. S$it.

I wish some more owners would post comments rather than bashers, too, btw.

I don't know if they are not selling or MB is trying to get them on the street faster to have people see them and raise interest. My dealer says they are moving well (he may say that anyway..:-) Their official dealer kickoff was yesterday nationwide and the lease may be part of the initial promotion.

Invoice pricing available

I recently bought 2006 ML at invoice, and I was able to get printed quote of R-Class at invoice, yes again at invoice. Maybe, I have a very good relationship with my dealer/salesperson, discounts are available and one needs to just try for it.

Thanks.

I would say you have a "very good relationship with your dealer." I was able to get a $1000 over invoice on a new R but this is not common among the people who have posted on this forum. Where is your dealer located?

If there is no pent-up demand for a vehicle, then discouts are common.

Thanks.

They are available at invoice also at Leitzinger imports in State College... I have friends at my local dealers (HBL & Euromotorcars) who said they were very disappointed with R-class sales..

A select few work their asses off to be able to afford a $60-$70K vehicle... When they are able to afford a vehicle of that caliber, they buy what? A well established luxury saloon? Sports car? Range Rover?... No.. I think I'll take the minivan.... Sorry folks... There's a fine line between minivans and luxury vehicles... Nevada Jack was able to fork over $70K for such a vehicle and I have no doubt that there are others like him... BUT ... He's in the minority and that's the bottom line..............

I can name 2 Dealers in Chicagoland area, MB of Naperville and MB of Arlington Heights. MB of Arlington Heights has 5 on lot (none sold) and MB of Naperville has 7 of them (dont know the sales figure). But, they are not selling as MB would have hoped.

At one point, I was also considering R-Class but the production vehicle turned out to be a total disappointment in comparison with the Vision / concept. IMHO.

I sincerely wish well for MB that this vehicle sells, but there are not too many people in the market in this economy ready to shell out 55-75K on a vehicle that one can label as Minivan. I dont see this vehicle as Minivan but I am talking about general perception, about the not so well informed customers out there.

Take any other vehicle in MB that is above 60K mark and they are all about Presitge (S-Class) or performance (AMG / Roadsters / SL ). R-Class does not ivoke that kind of emotion from enthusiats or who wants prestige.

I would rather spend 60K+ on S-Class, SLK, SL, CLS then on R-Class but again thats my opinion.

MBNA - if you are reading this : GET RID OF THE STANDARD TINTED SIDE AND REAR WINDOWS , and offer it as an option . The GST concept looked so sleek and " open " from the outside- like an ultraluxury supersized E class wagon.
The tint chops up the car visually in half , makes it look like a turtle and gives it a minivan vibe .

MBNA - if you are reading this : make Comand Navigation a separate option. I don't want the friggin' Panoramic roof - with which Navigation is bundled.

I am pretty sure that you can have the COMAND without the panoramic roof. If you go to the "build your own" page at mbusa, don't select the premium package on the option page, but select the COMAND DVD on the accessories page.

Thanks, Jack. But the "accessories" is merely the cost of parts to be installed by the dealer, after delivery. I would assume that the labor + parts bill for this by the stealership would equal the cost of the premium package. For example, I was quoted $3000 for parts + labor for phone wiring (this did not include the phone) for my E. "Accessories" parts show about $980 for this.

Jack is correct (don't doubt JACK!)

The price for COMAND DVD Navi is indeed parts and you'll have to ****er w/ your own dealer as to how much they will charge, but the navi install is a simple one, and has been offered as a dealer-install for all post-'02 M-classes for several years (as a retrofit as well) and install is always under $1000. If you can't pay less than this then you truly have a dishonest dealer.

In addition, in contrast to the numerous parts needed for the phone install, COMAND DVD is a single part.

You learn something new everyday.

I was surprised to see that if you order the aero kit as an accessory, the rear spoiler comes "ready to paint" by the dealer. I would have thought that it was painted at the factory.

Received a call from Glauser Mercedes in CO today. They have 18 R's for sale including 9 R500's. My sales rep told me that they are DOA. They're very willing to deal if anyone's interested. I'm still tempted and may try to pick one up if I can get a good deal.

Get one if you get a GREAT deal, otherwise wait for the Q7... I have higher expectations for that vehicle..

Mercedes all the way!
eric: i have to disagree with you. the allroad has a great interior but early reviews of the Q7 have already mentioned that the quality is not as per usual audi levels. in fact, a quick look at the pictures shows where the plastics aren't that great, and neither is the design:

one short review (near middle of the page):
http://www.cardesignnews.com/autosho...ghts/index.php

as for the exterior, looks nothing as sporty or unique as the R. in fact, reminds me of an raised estate car - i.e., looks like an updated allroad.

the R should have had an amazingly high-quality interior - but it doesn't - that i entirely agree. but the Q doesn't look any better to me.

it does have the upper hand in that it can seat 7.

anyway, i'd be very interested to see the first head-to-head review of these two cars!

"it does have the upper hand in that it can seat 7."

I really wanted to stay out of this regarding the Q7 but to clarify. In the initial release of the Q7 and either in the Audi narrative or a short review I read...it was stated (paraphrase) that "the rear two seats were really designed for children and would not accomodate adults to any great degree." They likened it to the rear facing jump seats in the current E class wagon. So when I see the Q7 as a "7 seater" I think it is slightly misleading. Perhaps some reviews will finally show a picture of the rear seating space and clarify this point.

Sometimes I wonder why the latest PR has given Audi a pass on "the greatest interiors." Your "Comparo" indicates that this is less than accurate. If people are having a problem with the R interior they will really have a problem with the Audi plain and kind of boring look. Red dials and displays do not make an interior great.

Here is another shot of the R interior to "comparo" I know Eric has seen these and sat in the R and still feels it is not $70K quality and I would tend to agree with him. But looking at the Q7 I don't think that looks like a $55K+ interior either.

Pictures can be misleading. The R interior looks great in pictures but not in person. As for Audi...let's wait until it's available before we judge it. I like the looks of the Q7 interior in the pictures but I also liked the looks of the R interior in pictures. Only time will tell.

I agree that the R will seat 6 adults in comfort while the Q7 will probably only seat 4 adults in comfort. However the Q7 looks like it will seat all three of my children in comfort in the middle row allowing me to use the entire back area as cargo. In the R I would have to use one of the back seats to seat my family giving me limited storage. I also don't like the fact that luggage, etc., is unsecured in the R if I'm utilizing one of the back seats.

If I needed space for 6 adults I'd definitely be in the market for an R. I like the fact that the Q7 can carry my wife and three children in comfort and two of their friends in the back when neccessary. I'm afraid that Mercedes is going to find that the R does not work very well for family's such as mine who need transportation for a load of kids. I really don't see empty nesters purchasing this vehicle either when an S class will do the job just as well. That leaves the R with a very small market IMO.

I've always been a huge Mercedes fan and I do hope that they do well with the R.
