I had a X5. The R500 feels slower because it runs smoother and quietier than X5 but their 0-60 numbers are very similiar. Rest assure your wife that she will definitely not find the R500 slow.

There were over 300 Benz's auctioned that day and I'm estimating that there were about 50 R's total and 15 or so were 500's. MB has a monthly auction in DC not weekly, maybe that's why they have so many cars.
