Thumbs down "Check Tire Pressure" message

Hi R-class owners,

My '06 R350 (purchased CPO in July '08) just gave me the "check tire pressure" message. When I "visually" checked the tires, they all looked fine to me. Do you think I have to take it a dealer to check the tire pressure monitor or should I just ignore the message?

Thanks,
-overland

may be one of the tire has low air pressure (Use gauge).

If it is low, inflate with more air and drive around. It should reset by itself.

If you hit a curb or a pot-hole and the tire deformed around the rim even for just a second it will display the "Check tire pressure" mssg. When you turn off the vehicle and go to your messages and acknowledge the message, if the pressure has returned or is not vitally low, the message will be gone. The "Check tire pressure" mssg. comes on when there is a sudden loss of pressure or when the tire pressure reaches below 20 lbs.

More than likely there was just a quick loss of pressure, and that's why you got the message.

I learned recently that, after checking the tire pressure and ensuring that it is correct, you must reset the tire pressure monitor in the COMAND center. While the car is parked and the ignition is on, scroll to the "Tire Pressure Monitor" screen. Press the Reset button (the R in the upper part of the instrument panel) and hold it for a second. That will reset the monitor to use the current air pressure as the reference point. Any significant deviation from that pressure will cause the system to give notice that your pressure has fallen.

Mine had been overinflated by the installer when I got new tires. Because the system hadn't been reset, the monitoring system gave me a warning. I was starting a road trip and decided to call the SOS help desk for advice. The tech support person coached me on how to reset the system.

I hope this helps.

I don't think he has the TPMS system. Otherwise it would have told him exactly which tire and what the pressure was. There is just a sensor, and if there is a sudden loss of pressure or low pressure it gives the generic "Check tire presure" warning indicator.

To my knowledge, my TPMS only tells me that the pressure is either too low or too high. I don't get any more precise info, that is, which tire, what pressure. Mine is an 07. If others have a more sophisticated system, that's great.
