When I started looking for a new family car I wanted AWD, 3rd row seat and a large sunroof. Since I was a kid I wanted a Cadillac and I started looking at the SRX as an option. I was a little frustrated because of the poor material quality of the SRX and my desire to own a Cadillac.
I then started looking at a Audi Q7 but did not want to pay over 30K. By doing more research I discovered that early models of the R-Class came standard with AWD. Living in CA makes it tough to find a car with AWD.
Within a couple of days of considering the R-Class as an option I found one for sale at a good price. I took the wife and kid to go check it out. We were so impressed that we bought it that night. The dealer just got it in the day before and we picked it up the next day.
I also remembered that my grandpa got his first Mercedes-Benz in 1962 and he only drove Mercedes-Benzs for the rest of his life, he died in 2004.
I got a R350 with panoramic roof and nav. It has 60K miles and the dealer put new brakes on it.
We paid $25K and bought an extended warranty 100K mile with no deductable for $3K.
I went on a 400 mile road trip last weekend and it performed perfectly. I love how solid and nimble the car feels. The fact you can’t see the hood when driving takes getting used to. We got between 22-23 MPG the whole trip.

Congratulations. I went through the same thing. I looked at the Lexus, BMW, etc etc. We ended up with the R. One of the things I like is that even when sitting in the third row seat you can see the front view on the front windshield.
(for the 6 seater version). I am just debating right now if I want to buy the 5 year , 100K extended warranty.

Thanks for the welcome. I got the warranty because if something goes wrong it could cost alot to repair. The warranty for me is more like an insurance policy. Mine is for 4year/100,00 miles. Its through SGI Services.
Yes, the 3rd row seats are awesome, very usable.
