Windshield replacement

My R350 just had crack windshield. Anyone have experience on replacing the windshield. Dealership wants $1200-1300 to replace it. But my insurance only allow up to $750. The OEM parts itself is $837 not including labor. Will the aftermarket windshild cause problems such as headlight sensor and rain sensor? Thank you.

I haven't had this happen, but have a friend with an M3 who had cracked windshield. The high price is due to the rain sensor, and what you quote is about the same as what he paid to have his replaced.

Sounds like it's par for the course for the high end cars.

Have your insurance agent prove to you will continue to have rain sensor feature.

Other than that, tell yourself you've already saved the price difference by purchasing inexpensive insurance.

It turns out my dealer uses outside shop for glass repair. I call them and they will do it for $8-900, OEM glass. I will post again when it's done tomorrow.

How did the windshield crack? Stone chip? or defect in windshield glass?

I think I heard couple of R's that have cracked headlamp housing glasses !!

I ended up have PPG glass replacment. ($800 vs $1200) According the the shop, it's the manufacture that make MB's glass. It has built in rain sensor on it.

I can see a stone cheap on the spot where it starts to crack.

R-class's headlamp is made of plastic, not glass, but i guess it can crack too.

PPG Industries is the manufacturer of the glass for all American made models as well as other models made in Germany. I am a former PPG employee and I can say that this is correct. The windshields in cars made in Germany may have different names on them but are made by PPG or its subsidiaries. Also, the primers and paints used on all Benzes and a bunch of adhesives are produced by PPG.
