Is front axle part available from anywhere other than dealer?
I've a 2006 R500 with 60k on it.
There is grinding / clunking noise coming from the front end when turning, it started doing it first on left hand turns, but now does it on both. Based on the research I've done it sounds like a CV joint failure and bulletin T-B-33.30/23b suggests a likely need to replace the front half shaft.
I've heard that the left front half shaft part alone costs over $1000, so I'm trying to think of ways to reduce the repair cost since I'm out of warranty. Does anyone know where to buy that part other than from the dealer? I've tried the usual places, AutohausAZ, PartsTrain, MBPartsWarehouse etc, they stock that part for other models, but not for the R?
Also, what is the chance in Mercedes covering part of cost of the repair as a goodwill gesture since the bulletin states the cause is the CV joint 'not having an optimized finish in the bearing race'?
Thanks.
